Well I've done it!! The little Joybird struggled up the hill a bit, but once I changed gears, I managed to make some "mileage" out of it ( shows what era I grew up in, when I can't think in metrics!) I still feel a little lost driving around the Internet "carpark", but I found this parking space so I think I'll do OK!!

My first car, a Datsun Bluebird, was my pride & joy....hence the name Joybird.

Many hours of pleasure were spent transporting myself & friends to teaching rounds, lectures and weekends away. I felt I never really knew how to drive until I actually gained my licence & had to make split second safety decisions on my own.
My first major journey was to have been from my home town to Ballarat, to drop a passenger at the train station and wait to meet my family for a weekend in Geelong. Having no experience of hills where I lived, I did not realize the necessity of changing down gears in order to maintain a reasonable speed!! My younger brother (14 yrs at the time) commented "This car's got no guts"!!
Needless to say, we missed the train and I bravely decided to continue on to Geelong with my passengers, to catch a connecting train. To say my parents were flabbergasted is an understatement, as I was known for my reticence to "break out"from the normal daily routine or stand out in a crowd!

Eventually, my driving confidence built up to a level where I would have loved to drive an MG, or in today's comparison,an XR6 or SS. (I still have a leadfoot and envy my son & son-in-law who own such vehicles!!)

Starting this course puts me right back in those early days....Can I do this?..Am I confident enough to tackle the unknown?..Will I make a fool of myself or be a "Sunday Driver", never to attempt anything daring??

As my formal schooling years were "preweb" I have a healthy respect for the "superior knowledge" of a computer, even tho' I know it's all in my hands. That's the trouble, one wrong move as I navigate my way around, & I relegate it all into cyber space. Hopefully, I will soon get the gist of this new technology (it's taken long enough to learn the stuff I currently know), & I will gain my "web licence", and a newfound confidence in my own abilities.
